Works Inspired by the Sea and Sky
Karla is an artist based in the south-east of Wexford, Ireland. She graduated from the National College of Art and Design, Dublin in 2005 with a degree in Fine Art Painting and also completed an artist’s residency in Limassol Studios, Cyprus in 2004.
The theme of her work is loosely based on the landscape but it is the sea and the sky that feature most in her paintings. Because she lives close to the coast she is familiar with the shifting nature of its scenery and is inspired to capture its transiency on canvas. Essentially she is attempting to describe the emotion of a sublime landscape in her paintings. To do this she uses layers of colour and a ‘brushed-out’ effect. She mainly works on large canvases to best reflect the formidable nature of the landscape, sea or sky but knows that, like a snapshot, a more diminutive piece can also work to portray this.

“I believe that everyone, at some point in their life, has the experience of discovering a place that will remain in their memory forever. The cause of this can manifest in different ways. It may be the location of a life-changing occurrence, or it may be the most visually beautiful scenery ever encountered, or the most heart breaking. It is a place that may have only been visited once but has lingered in the mind of the beholder since, to be recalled with feelings of nostalgia.With these landscapes I am striving to encapsulate that hazy memory of a place from the past. They are fictional landscapes but their elements are derived from reality. I have used colour, light and forms taken from real seas, skies, forests, fields and rivers I have observed throughout my life, from Cyprus to Nevada to Wexford, wherever there is a particular atmosphere and ephemeral quality to be seen.The circular forms I use in my work are symbols of memory. I like the idea of memories being metaphysical shapes, drifting about in ones mind. Essentially, my work is about describing a scene that is significant to the individual in a universal manner. I wish to capture the nostalgic feeling of remembering a special place from a past time. I would hope that the subtle forms and mellow hues invite the viewer to step into the painting and think of a landscape that was once important to them.” – Karla Enright
