Creating Physical Narratives

Sue Cunliffe was born in preston, UK, she moved to Ireland in 1976 and is a lecturer at the Crawford College of Art and Design, Cork. She works in various media such as printmaking, drawing, sculpture and artist’s book. Her practice searches for the absurd in everyday experiences such as travel, dreams, imagination, memory and emotion. Some of her works incorporate printmaking and sculptural elements and her artist’s books focus on the theme of communication, creating narratives through a physical vein rather than the spoken word.

Chairperson of The Cork Printmakers

The work is often peppered with a hint of the comical, the mysterious and usually, a healthy hint of menace and confusion.  I enjoy picture-making and narrative, selecting elements from the vast resource that is ‘the human condition within its environment’.  The work is allegorical and often conveys a moral or amusing message, so the words (titles or text) and visuals, act as metaphor for the viewer, with whom I hope to engage, using a universal and comprehensive language.”- Sue Cuniffe

Sue was chairperson of the Cork Printmakers from 1999 to 2002 when the studio moved to its present purpose built facility in Wandersford Quay, Cork.  She has exhibited throughout Ireland and abroad with solo shows in the Crawford Gallery, Cork (1994,1996), in the Graficki Collective, Belgrade (1996) and in the Fenton Gallery, Cork (2001).  Her work has appeared in many group exhibitions in Ireland, America, Canada, China, Germany, Poland and the UK.  Sue has been awarded many prizes and commissions. She was a prizewinner both at the Impressions Exhibition (2009), Galway Arts Centre and at the Wrexham International Print Exhibition, Wales.
