Aspects of Identity

Her work explores different aspects of identity – the disappearance and resurfacing of inherited characteristics, and the effects the decisions of someone else, or events in their lives, however small, have on one’s own life and make-up. Looking at epigenetics, the hidden capacity of ‘something’ (e.g. environment, diet, traumatic event, etc.) to have an effect on the character and development of the genes, she considers the persistence of the past in the present and the element of chance in the make-up of the individual.

What makes you who you are?

How do you happen to be where you are now?

Is it chance?

Is it fate?

Do you have any say?

Sylvia has won many awards for her work including an Arts Council Travel & Training Award in 2013, in 2009 a Wexford Co. Co. Artists Bursary Award and in 2008 a Golden Fleece Merit Award. Her works are held in collections in Ireland and abroad, including the collections of the O.P.W, The National College of Art & Design, Dublin, The National Print Museum, Dublin, Wexford County Council, NCAD, (Dublin), Wexford VEC and the State University of New York.

“The title of my work in the County Council collection is ‘Tagged’ It is an original print, in an edition of 10, made using the Photo-intaglio process. It is from a series of works exploring epigenetic tagging using metaphorical imagery and interrelating cause and effect in relation to identity.” – Sylvia Hemmingway
